Cancer is a frighteningly common experience: two in five Australians will be diagnosed by the age of 85. Yet many of us, whether we’ve received a diagnosis ourselves or are close to someone who has, must then navigate a minefield of emotional and practical challenges. All three authors of Being Patient – which shares the stories of patients, caregivers and clinicians – have known what it’s like to get that dreaded diagnosis and to negotiate what comes next. Join two of them as they explore the complexities of cancer and its care.

Na'ama Carlin
Na’ama Carlin is an award-winning educator and Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of New South Wales. She has written about the need for policy reform concerning pregnancy and cancer and has advocated for equitable access to cutting-edge cancer medication.
Louise Chappell
Louise Chappell is a Scientia Professor and an award winning author at the University of New South Wales where she researches gender justice in politics, policy and law. She has been in Cancer World for 17 years and is passionate about improving equity in oncology treatment.
Edwina Shaw
Edwina Shaw is a Queensland author and editor of fiction, memoir and screenplays. She is the author of Dear Madman, A Guide Through Grief, Thrill Seekers, In the Dark of Night and editor of Bjelke Blues and Queersland. Dear Madman is the story she was born to write.
