The first American winner of the 2016 Man Booker Prize, Paul Beatty joins Wesley Enoch, Director of the Sydney Festival and past Queensland Theatre Company Artistic Director in a conversation about humour, writing and what we mean by progress.
Contemporary Indigenous Australian artist Fred Leone, front man of hip hop group Impossible Odds, and head of the Yawar Nuba dance group will present a brand new spoken word performance as part of the event inspired by his Tongan and South Sea Islander heritage.
Copies of The Sellout will be available for purchase on the evening from the SLQ Bookshop.

Paul Beatty
Paul Beatty is the author of the novels Slumberland, Tuff, The White Boy Shuffle and The Sellout, which won the Man Booker Prize in 2016. He is also the author of two books of poetry, Big Bank Take Little Bank and Joker, Joker, Deuce, and is the editor of Hokum: An Anthology of African-American Humour. He lives in New York City.
Fred Leone
Fred Leone is a musician/artist with traditional ties to Butchulla and Waanyi Garawa Country and South Sea Islander descent. Fred is the front man for the hip hop group Impossible Odds, which expresses issues facing aboriginal people through music.
Wesley Enoch
Wesley Enoch is the Director of the Sydney Festival. He has been a theatre director/writer for over 25 years specialising in Aboriginal Theatre. Wesley has been Artistic Director of Queensland Theatre Company 2010-15, Ilbijerri 2003-06 and Kooemba Jdarra 1994-97 and Resident Director at Sydney Theatre Company 2000-01, Associate Artist Director Company B Belvoir 2007-10 and worked on the Opening Ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Wesley has worked with all the large theatre companies, arts centre and festivals in Australia and won multiple awards. Wesley was a Trustee of the Sydney Opera House 2006-13 and is the Chair of the ATSI Strategy Panel for the Australia Council.
