Duration: 180 minutes
Join internationally bestselling author of sixteen historical novels, Christine Wells, for an interactive, hands-on workshop for writers of historical fiction. Learn how to write a vivid story set in the past that will hold readers riveted, even in the age of Netflix and Nintendo. From premise, setting, structure, characterisation, all the way to the final polish, Christine will share techniques and tips on how to immerse both yourself and your reader in another time and place.
In this workshop, participants will learn how to:
- Immerse themselves in the period in which they write
- Know when to stop researching and begin writing
- Formulate a story premise that will catch the attention of readers, agents, and editors
- Use the historical timeline to determine how their novel or story should be structured
- Decide what to fictionalise and what facts are set in stone
- Use prose, dialogue, and syntax to suggest time and place
- Write vibrant characters that are more than vehicles for the history
- Make the conflict in the story resonate with modern readers
