Schools Program FAQs
Q. What do the sessions look like?
Brisbane Writers Festival's schools program presents Australian children's, middle grade and young adult authors in talks tailored to their age group and stage of learning. Students will have the opportunity to engage directly with authors during Q&A, and after the session meet the writers to have their book signed.
Q. Who can attend?
You don't have to be part of a school excursion group to attend. Parents are welcome to bring their children, and student teachers, etc. are welcome to come as professional development. All attendees must hold a ticket.
Q. Can I book my students into sessions recommended for different age groups?
Yes, if you feel this is a better fit for your students. The suggested age range guides you to the content and delivery style of each session, so for typical classes we recommend sticking with the suggested age groups.
Q. What if we have more teachers coming than is afforded to us by the complimentary tickets?
Extra teacher tickets can be purchased at the adult price.
Q. Can I drop my child off and go to a different session/sit outside?
Older children may access secondary school sessions unaccompanied at parent discretion.
Q. Can books be purchased?
Books by presenting authors will be available to purchase at the festival bookshop. Book signings will follow each session, and if students already own any books by the presenting authors, they are also welcome to bring these from home to get signed.
Q. What can students bring?
Backpacks are allowed in the venue, however we recommend students bring a smaller bag if possible. We also highly encourage students to bring a notebook and pens/pencils as some sessions involve writing and drawing activities.
Q. What’s for lunch?
There are breaks between sessions for students to have lunch, and they are welcome to bring their own. Food and drink will also be available for purchase from various cafes and vendors on site. New Farm Park or Powerhouse Park are good spots for a break outside.
Q. Will photos be taken?
BWF photographers will be on-site throughout the festival. Photos taken may be used in BWF marketing material. The purchase of a ticket implies permission for photos to be used for these purposes.
Q. Who is the YA program suitable for?
Our YA program is seperate to the schools program but features some of the same young adult authors. The sessions formats are panels or in-conversations (interview-style) rather than solo author presentations/workshops. If your students are also interested in attending a YA session, we recommend it for students in grade 10 and up.
