#About
Garry Disher lives on the Mornington Peninsula and is one of Australia’s best-known authors. Born on a farm in South Australia, he decided in childhood to become a writer, influenced by a love of reading, his father’s creative bedtime storytelling, and the isolation of farm life. After gaining a BA from Adelaide University, he worked and travelled widely in the UK, Europe and Africa, before moving to Victoria and further study at Monash University. Meanwhile his short stories were winning awards and appearing in literary magazines, and on the strength of these he was awarded a creative-writing fellowship to Stanford University in California.
Back in Melbourne, Garry wrote and taught part time for many years before becoming a full-time writer. He’s now published over 50 books: fiction for adults and children, creative writing handbooks and history textbooks. His crime novels are highly regarded overseas, appearing on best-seller and best books of the year lists and winning the Deutsche Krimi Preis three times. He’s won Best Crime Novel twice in Australia, and in 2018 received the Australian Crime Writers Association Lifetime Achievement award. His latest novels are the third ‘Hirsch’ crime novel, Consolation (the first two were best sellers and won awards), and the literary novel, Her.
