Wadi Wadi Elder Aunty Barbara Nicholson and Gamilaroi poet and musician Luke Patterson talk about the healing properties of the arts and telling one’s own story in the Dreaming Inside anthologies that share the voices of incarcerated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Luke Patterson
Luke Patterson is a Gamilaroi poet, educator and musician living on Gadigal lands. His poetry has appeared in Cordite, Plumwood Mountain, Rabbit, Running Dog and The Suburban Review. You will also find his work in anthologies including NANGAMAY dream MANA gather DJURALI grow as well as Best of Australian Poems 2023. Luke’s research and creative pursuits are grounded in extensive work with First Nations and other community-based organisations across Australia.
Aunty Barbara Nicholson
Aunty Barbara Nicholson is a Wadi Wadi Elder from the Illawara who holds a degree in English Literature (Newcastle) and an Honorary Doctorate of Laws (UOW). In 2023 Aunty Barb was the recipient of the FNAWN Lifetime Achievement to First Nations Literature. She initiated the Ngana Barangarai (Black Wallaby) project which collects and publishes writing from the First Australian inmates in Junee Jail for the last 12 years. The anthology Dreaming Inside: Voices from Junee Correctional Centre is a unique collection of the authentic voice of its contributors.
Rhianna Patrick
Rhianna Patrick is a freelance Torres Strait Islander journalist, broadcaster and audio content creator with 25 years' media experience. She's worked across news, tv documentaries, national radio programming and podcasts. She's written for Kill Your Darlings, NME Australia, The Australian Music Vault, Rotten Tomatoes and IndigenousX. Rhianna also curates one of Spotify Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander playlists, 'Original Storytellers'.
