We are all haunted by the past. These writers of speculative, gothic and historical fiction explore the macabre anima of history – how it manifests in the uncanny and dissolves the boundary between fantasy and reality.

Angela Slatter
Angela Slatter is the author of five novels, including All the Murmuring Bones and The Path of Thorns and eleven short story collections, including The Bitterwood Bible and The Tallow-Wife and Other Tales. She’s won a World Fantasy Award, a British Fantasy Award, a Ditmar, two Australian Shadows Awards and seven Aurealis Awards; she's been a finalist for the Courier-Mail People’s Choice Book of the Year Award and nominated for the Dublin Literary Award. Her work has been translated into Bulgarian, Chinese, Russian, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Polish, Hungarian, Turkish, French and Romanian. Kathleen Jennings
Kathleen Jennings is a writer and illustrator based in Brisbane. Her Australian Gothic debut Flyaway won a British Fantasy Award and was shortlisted for the World Fantasy Award and The Courier-Mail People's Choice Award, among others. Her illustrations have won a World Fantasy Award and been shortlisted for the Hugo Awards.
Shelley Parker-Chan
Shelley Parker-Chan is the author of the #1 Sunday Times bestselling historical fantasy novel She Who Became the Sun. They won the Astounding Award and the British Fantasy Awards for Best Novel and Best Newcomer, and have been a finalist for the Lambda, Locus, Aurealis, Ditmar, and British Book Awards. They live in Melbourne, Australia.
Chloe Gong
Chloe Gong is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the critically acclaimed Secret Shanghai novels, as well as the Flesh and False Gods trilogy. Her books have been published in over twenty countries and have been featured in the New York Times, PEOPLE, Forbes and more. She is a recent graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where she double-majored in English and International Relations. Born in Shanghai and raised in Auckland, New Zealand, Chloe is now located in New York City, pretending to be a real adult.
Jo Anderton
Joanne Anderton is an award-winning writer of science fiction, fantasy and horror... but also kids books and creative nonfiction. Her most recent shot story collections are Inanimates: Tales of Everyday Fear and The Art of Broken Things. She's currently doing a PhD at UQ, where she's attempting to use speculative fiction to write memoir, and having far too much fun in the process.
