Powering our digital lives and green technologies relies on some of the Earth’s most precious metals. China dominates much of the rare earth minerals industry. Many consumers are unaware of are the conditions under which rare earth minerals are mined and traded, and the environmental, economic, geopolitical, and human costs of this new reliance. Presented in collaboration with ABC Radio National’s Big Ideas.

Paul Barclay
Paul Barclay is a Walkley Award winning journalist and broadcaster with an appetite for ideas and in-depth analysis and discussion. Paul has produced countless stories over more than twenty years for an array of programs on virtually all ABC radio networks. He is currently the host of Big Ideas on ABC RN.
Guillaume Pitron
Guillaume Pitron, 40, is a French journalist (Le Monde Diplomatique, National Geographic, etc.) and a documentary maker for France’s leading television channels. In 2020, he published his first book, "The Rare Metals War: The Dark Side Of the Energy Transition and Digitalization" (Scribe Editions). To date, he has been awarded 14 French and international journalism awards. These include the Izraelezewicz Prize for best investigative report of the year, awarded by the leading daily newspaper Le Monde, and the award for best economic book of the year 2018. He holds a post-graduate law degree from the Paris universities, and a Masters in international law from the University of Georgetown (Washington, D.C).
