Learn the tricks of the trade as Steven Herrick shares writing tips and presents some of his all-time favourite poems.
Like all his books, Steven’s twenty-first book Pookie Aleera is Not My Boyfriend, began with location and character. In Pookie Steven wanted to write about primary school children living in a small country town where everyone knows everyone else. His every day characters are literary devices for exploring friendship, community, and identity, that offer students the opportunity to reconsider their own place in the world.

Steven Herrick
Steven Herrick is the author of twenty-six books for children and young adults. His books have twice won the NSW Premier's Literary Awards and been shortlisted for the CBCA Book of the Year Awards on nine occasions. He is widely regarded as a pioneer of the verse-novel genre. In 2019, his YA verse-novel by the river won the prestigious German Youth Literature Award in translation. He was born in Brisbane and lives in the Blue Mountains.
