Volunteer FAQs
Q. When are the volunteer callouts open?
Volunteer applications for the 2025 festival will be open in August 2025. Subscribe to our newsletter or follow our Instagram to be among the first to see the callout.
Q. Do I need special skills or qualifications?
A: Some positions do not require specific skills, and some do. In general, BWF volunteers only need:
- A friendly, professional and can-do attitude
- Punctuality and reliability
- Fluency in English
- A willingness to follow directions and work in a team
- A commitment to making the festival a fantastic experience for the public, festival guests, staff and volunteers
Q: Is there a minimum commitment of hours required to volunteer with Brisbane Writers Festival?
A: We request you complete 15 hours with BWF in exchange for:
- Discounted or complimentary tickets to festival sessions
- Snacks when on duty
- A Certificate of Participation
We understand some volunteers have parenting or work/study commitments that limit their available hours, and that's fine – just let us know what you can manage.
Q: Can people under 18 years old volunteer for Brisbane Writers Festival?
A: It depends, but generally, no – please contact info@bwf.org.au to make a request. If approved, please note, young people must be always accompanied by a supervising adult while volunteering.
Q: Can I get into sessions in exchange for my volunteer hours with Brisbane Writers Festival?
A: Since we are in a new venue in 2025, we are doing things slightly differently. Volunteers at BWF will be given a code to access special heavily discounted tickets once they complete their volunteer training and induction.
Q:Will I be provided training?
A: If you have applied for a role that requires special skills (i.e. Stage Management), we will provide you with training and induction if you have never done it before. All BWF volunteers will be given an induction pack and info sheet prior to their first shift, and the BWF Volunteer Coordinator will be on the ground with you during the festival so that you will feel safe and comfortable at all times. Training will be provided prior to the start of the festival and online only this year.
Q: Will I need to provide any documentation?
A: Volunteers are required to provide BWF with any relevant supporting documents, e.g. current Blue Card, etc. as required.
Q: What shall I wear while volunteering?
A: At BWF, we would love if our volunteers can wear a black t-shirt, and bottoms that are tidy and presentable, but also represent who you are as a person. We do not accept volunteers who come to their shift with open toed shoes for health and safety reasons. If you do so, you will be sent home to change. If you position requires you to work outdoors, please bring a hat and a water bottle.
