2. First Nations Storytellers
Welcome to Room for Dreaming: First Nations storytellers. We are pleased to have you join us for the very first but certainly not the last First Nations interpretation of Brisbane Writers Festival. In curating this online festival there was a key question needing to be asked.
What does it mean to have room for Dreaming?
Dreaming being culture and story that relates us to the land and to each other. Another definition being the ability to imagine and perceive a reality beyond our current circumstance. One stretches backward and the other reaches forward. From the centre point of these two definitions, each artist featured in the program stands. Embodying and telling the stories that have come before them and creating room in their respective artforms to dream a new one.
This takes courage, commitment and consistency. With the events of this year whether it be the virus or continued systemic oppression, those three attributes have certainly prevailed.
Room for Dreaming gives you a peek at the body of work each storyteller has established. Our hope is that from here, we continue to do what we have done so well this year; support, celebrate and give space to the voices and dreaming of First Nations storytellers.
