History of Brisbane Writers Festival


1962 Warana Writers Weekend, Warana Festival
1985 Warana Writers Week - expanded to include public events
  • UQP partnership
  • Shift to South Bank and some city venues
  • Funding of around $50,000 from the Australia Council, Queensland Government and corporate sponsorship. Administration and technical services provided by Warana secretariat.
1996 Festival becomes an incorporated association named Brisbane Writers Festival
2005 Schools program - 4,000 free places
2006 Schools program increases to 10,000 places
2006 Partnership with The Australian commences, program distributed nationally
2007 Festival relocates to State Library of Queensland
2009 Festival audience grows to 29,000 places
2010 Festival audience increases to 30,000 places
30 international, 90 national and 150 local Festival participants including writers and Chairs
2011 7 - 11 September
  • Festival First Night, Thursday, 8 September
  • Word Play: for young readers writers and illustrators (Grades 4 - 10)  increases to 12,000 places
  • Online Literature Festival - 1,200 students online in regional and remote classrooms
  • Program distributed nationally inThe Weekend Australian, 30/31 July
  • Introducing BWF Professional Development Series including Australian Writers Marketplace and Publishing in the Young Adult and Children's market
  • 20% increase in State Government funding (2011-2013) through the Small to Medium Organisations Funding Program (s2m) administered by Arts Queensland
  • Five Premier Partners: Queensland Government (Arts Qld), 612ABC, slq, The Australian, The University of Queensland
